How big could you be if you allowed yourself to take up space?
If you didn’t allow yourself to sit in the fear
of what might happen
when you are honest and true?
“Is red lipstick too much?”
“Can I pull this off?”
“Am I too intense?”
“Is my art too raw, to honest, to out there?”

These questions have no place here.
Breathe in deeply, and take up the space you need.
Let go of all that others want you to be.
We need your whole self in this world.
Don’t hold back your love and brightness.

I write this to myself, to remember and hold on to.
For so long, I learned to hid myself until there was nothing left to see,
except what everyone else wanted me to be.
I was still and quite,
striving to be perfect and people please.
until I lost who I was:
the wild, untethered me.
I never felt “enough,” because I wasn’t…
I could never measure up to all I never was.
This is my new narrative…to take up space,
to share with vulnerability and bravery,
to me make this messy art,
to wear my heart on my sleeve.
I can go where my curiously takes me.
Think of how often we diminish ourselves, make ourselves smaller for others, second guessed our intuition, stay silent, don’t listen to that whisper in our souls.
What would you build, sing, dance, wear, do, or create, if you let yourself take up the space you need? If you didn’t worry about what others think, and followed your truest instincts?
A non-complete list of ways to take up space:
Wear the red lipstick
Paint with glitter
Make a mess
Speak your truth
Write the book, the poem, the story
Laugh out loud
Go skinny dipping
Sit in the light of the moon
Dance to your favorite record
Love without abandon
Break the rules
Also!! We have twin pups 🐶 your cavalier looks so much like my boy Finn!
I love this poem, and how you showed your process behind this art piece. So lovely! 🥰
